Italian supercar maker Lamborghini is diving its toes into the world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The latest project, named the Space Key, is a piece created in collaboration with an unidentified artist. The NFT is a unique piece of digital art that can be accessible via a QR code. The project is limited to five pieces and will be auctioned off in the coming weeks.

The Space Key is made from a carbon fiber composite material that Lamborghini took to the International Space Station in 2019 as part of an experiment. When it returned to earth, the carbon fiber was crafted into this unique art. The physical element is embossed with an NFT serial number that is linked to the corresponding digital artwork by using an QR code on the back.
For those who aren't in the know, NFTs are distinct identification numbers that are stored on a distributed blockchain ledger and tied to a digital asset such as a picture, video or other type of record. This allows owners to ensure authenticity, scarcity, and trackability of their tokens over the internet.
Lamborghini takes this unique approach to art by working with NFT PRO - an all-white label NFT solution for business. In the coming weeks, the company will be sharing details about the exciting project including the name of the unknown artist and a timeline for the auction.
The physical component of the Space Key
Following multiple social media posts that tease something space-themed, Italian supercar maker Lamborghini has stepped into the realm of tokens that are not fungible (NFT) with an exclusive project dubbed Space Key. The NFT was developed in collaboration with an unknown artist and will be auctioned off in just a few weeks. Its base is composed of a high-tech carbon fibre composite material, which was shipped to the International Space Station in 2019 as part a research project. The carbon fiber has been 3D printed to form the basis of each Space Key, which is connected to an exclusive, entirely digital artwork via the QR code that is on its backside. Only five Space Keys were produced.
NFTs are unique identification numbers that can be recorded on distributed ledgers such the Blockchain and linked to a digital asset such as pictures. It's a hot topic among those with more money than they have common sense. So it was only a matter of time before automakers decided to cash in.
Space Key consists of five units. They were constructed using a real piece of carbon fiber composite, which was sent to the ISS in 2019. Each NFT will be equipped with an QR code that will link it to an exclusive digital art piece by the same artist. More details will be revealed in the coming days and weeks including the name of the artist along with the digital artwork and how to buy one of the five Space Keys.

After returning to Earth the Space Key was imprinted with the QR code which links it to the digital element of the Space Key.
Each of the five Space Keys features a different moment that occurs at different times as the Lamborghini Ultimae takes off towards the stars. More than 600 million pixels up each of the five images, that were taken by photographer Fabian Oefner.
